Kawasaki is keeping things simple for 2027, confirming that its retro-styled W230 will return to the UK range at the same £4,654 starting price.

The lightweight single-cylinder motorcycle only arrived in the UK for 2026, but Kawasaki clearly sees room for the W230 in a market that continues to embrace simple, accessible retro motorcycles.

For 2027, the formula remains largely unchanged. The W230 keeps its air-cooled 233cc single-cylinder engine, lightweight chassis, low seat and classic styling, while the new model is offered in an Ebony finish. Kawasaki says the 2027 W230 will be available from August.

Small Engine, Classic Character

The W230 isn't trying to be a performance motorcycle. Instead, Kawasaki has built it around an uncomplicated riding experience. Its 233cc air-cooled, four-stroke single-cylinder engine uses SOHC two-valve technology and fuel injection, producing 18 PS at 7,000 rpm and 18.6 Nm of torque at 5,800 rpm.

Power reaches the rear wheel through a six-speed transmission. That modest output is matched to the W230's lightweight construction. Kawasaki lists a 143kg curb mass, making the bike particularly manageable at low speeds and during everyday riding. The engine also gets an internal balancer designed to smooth acceleration, while Kawasaki has tuned the exhaust for the deep, pulsing character associated with a classic single-cylinder motorcycle.

The W230 Is About Accessibility

One of the most interesting aspects of the W230 is its dimensions. The seat sits just 745mm above the ground, while the motorcycle uses a compact chassis and a relatively narrow profile. Kawasaki says the combination is intended to make the bike approachable for both new riders and those returning to motorcycling.

The riding position is deliberately relaxed, with an upright relationship between the handlebar, seat and footpegs. That makes the W230 less about chasing numbers and more about enjoying the ride. For urban use, back-road cruising and everyday trips, the lightweight chassis and low seat can be just as important as outright horsepower.

A Design That Looks Back

Kawasaki draws the W230's styling inspiration from the 1965 Kawasaki 650-W1, one of the company's historically significant W-series motorcycles.

The modern W230 carries several familiar retro details, including:

• Teardrop-style fuel tank

• Steel fenders

• Spoked wheels

• Classic-style seat

• Retro meters

• Peashooter-style exhaust

• Traditional W-series proportions

Despite the vintage appearance, the motorcycle uses modern fuel injection, an electric starter and contemporary chassis engineering.

It's essentially a modern small-capacity motorcycle wearing the visual language of Kawasaki's past.

What Changes for 2027?

There isn't a major mechanical overhaul for the second year of UK availability. Instead, Kawasaki is keeping the W230's established formula intact and changing the available finish to Ebony.

The price also remains £4,654, matching the listed starting price of the previous model year.

That consistency is notable because the W230 occupies a slightly different position from Kawasaki's larger modern classics. It isn't trying to compete through engine size or outright performance.

Its appeal comes from being light, approachable and visually distinctive.

The Case for Keeping Things Simple

Motorcycles have become increasingly sophisticated, with electronic rider aids, multiple riding modes, advanced suspension systems and increasingly complex engine technology becoming common even outside the superbike segment.

The W230 goes in another direction. It offers a relatively small air-cooled single, conventional suspension, a lightweight frame, spoked wheels and a six-speed gearbox.

For some riders, that's exactly the point. There's something appealing about a motorcycle that doesn't require an explanation before you ride it. Start the engine, settle into the upright riding position and enjoy the mechanical character.

The W230's continuation into 2027 suggests Kawasaki believes there is still a place for that kind of motorcycle.
